Wire, Rod, Tube and Sheet Inspection

The ARIS single channel In-Line inspection systems are designed for use on in line applications such as cold headers, sheet metal presses and other low speed production level manufacturing equipment. The simplicity of the ARIS small footprint installation and ease of operation enables the system to be utilized with virtually no setup time for the operator. With detection at the input of the final production process tool damage is reduced, scrap is controlled and depending upon the production process eliminates post production inspection.

Electromagnetic Acoustic Spectroscopy is the technology used in the ARIS product line. It is non-contact, highly tolerant of the rigors of the industrial environment and is configured for use by manufacturing floor personnel. For the application of wire inspection just two EMAT sensors are required to generate the acoustic waves that provide complete circumferential coverage.

The unique design of these sensors and Resonic’s proprietary signal processing techniques enable control over the size and penetration depth of the acoustic field. This spatial control over the acoustic field enables the isolation of internal defects from surface or near surface defects.

As an example, this control of the depth of penetration provides the unique capability in detecting alloy segregation or interior diameter defects in tubing. In the application on sheet metal internal defects such as delaminations are detectable.

The detection of anomalous conditions as small as 30 microns is achievable depending upon material type, purity and manufacturing tolerances. In the case of wire used in precision forming applications measurement capability can be set at the required minimum ASTM 2282 level or better. Capabilities exceeding traditional NDT methods are available options including abnormal residual stress, hardness variation, decarburization, cladding integrity and general elastic properties are measurable. The high frequency ultrasonics and non-contact nature reduce and simplify application in the industrial environment. The two transducers are mounted in the self- adjusting clamp type fixture. INSERT GRAPHIC 4 In the case of cylindrical product such as wire or rod the transducers follow the surface and contours of the wire. There is no need for any fixture adjustments with changes in wire diameter or any requirements for additional containment, necessary with all other measurement methods, of the material under inspection while it is moving.

Currently the products are available off the shelf for wire diameters up to 33mm and sheet metals up to 75mm wide. Multi-channel systems are under development extending capability. Weld monitoring is also available for both plate and tube.
